How to Care for Your Leather Goods

A well-made leather piece is built to last years — sometimes decades. But even the best full-grain hide needs a little attention to stay at its best. The good news: leather care isn't complicated. It just needs to be consistent.

Here's everything you need to know to keep your leather goods looking sharp and ageing beautifully.

1. Keep It Clean

Dirt and surface grime are leather's quiet enemies. Left too long, they work into the grain and dull the finish over time.

For routine cleaning:

  • Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the surface after use
  • For light marks or dust, a slightly damp cloth works well — never soaking wet
  • Avoid household cleaners, alcohol wipes, or anything with harsh chemicals. They strip the natural oils from the hide and accelerate cracking

For deeper cleaning, use a dedicated leather cleaner applied with a soft cloth in gentle circular motions. Let it dry naturally before moving to the next step.

2. Condition Regularly

Leather is skin. Like skin, it needs moisture to stay supple and resist cracking. Conditioning replaces the natural oils that dry out over time — especially in low-humidity environments or after exposure to heat.

  • Condition your leather goods every 3–6 months, or whenever the surface starts to feel dry or stiff
  • Use a quality leather conditioner — beeswax-based or lanolin-based products work well for most hides
  • Apply a small amount with a soft cloth, work it in evenly, and allow it to absorb fully before use
  • Less is more — over-conditioning can soften the leather too much and affect its structure

3. Protect It From the Elements

Water, heat, and direct sunlight are the three things most likely to damage leather prematurely.

  • Water: If your leather gets wet, blot it dry immediately with a clean cloth. Never use a hairdryer or place it near a heat source — let it air dry naturally, away from direct heat
  • Heat: Prolonged exposure to radiators, car dashboards, or direct sunlight dries out the hide and causes fading and cracking
  • Sunlight: UV exposure fades colour over time. Store leather goods away from windows when not in use

A leather protector spray adds an extra layer of defence against moisture and light staining — worth applying to bags and shoes that see regular outdoor use.

4. Store It Properly

How you store leather matters as much as how you clean it.

  • Store bags stuffed with tissue paper or a bag insert to help them hold their shape
  • Keep leather in a breathable dust bag — never in plastic, which traps moisture and encourages mould
  • Store in a cool, dry place with good air circulation
  • For wallets and small accessories, avoid overstuffing — it stretches the leather and distorts the shape over time

5. Handle Scratches and Scuffs the Right Way

Surface scratches on full-grain leather are often easier to address than they look. In many cases, gently rubbing the area with a clean fingertip generates enough warmth to blend the scratch back into the grain.

For deeper scuffs:

  • Apply a small amount of leather conditioner and work it in gently
  • Use a colour-matched leather cream for more visible marks on smooth leather
  • Accept that some marks are part of the patina — on quality leather, they add character rather than detract from it

6. Let It Age

This is the part most people overlook. Premium leather isn't meant to look the same at year five as it did on day one. It's meant to look better.

The patina that develops on full-grain leather — the deepening of colour, the softening of texture, the subtle marks of use — is what separates a genuinely well-made piece from everything else. It's not wear. It's character.

Care for your leather consistently, and it will reward you with a finish that no new piece can replicate.
